The power of Vitamin C…

Are you looking for a skincare gamechanger?

Serums and other skincare products that contain vitamin C could be just what you need.

Scientific studies have shown that vitamin C can:

  • Improve the appearance and texture of your skin.
  • Reduce redness and even out skin tone.
  • Brighten dull complexions and promotes glowing skin.
  • Synthesize collagen production for more youthful looking skin.
  • Slow the early signs of ageing and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Reduce the appearance of dark spots.
  • Help prevent sun damage when used with sunscreen.
  • Alleviate acne.
  • Reduce puffiness from inflammation.
  • Keep skin hydrated by reducing transdermal water loss.
  • Improved skin barrier function.

What is vitamin C?

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can effectively fight skin-damaging toxins (those harmful ‘free radicals’ that we hear so much about).

Free radicals can be produced in the body naturally, but they’re also introduced from outside sources, such as pollution. Ever increasing levels of pollution are resulting in free radicals becoming more prevalent. Where you live or work can play a significant role in how much pollution your skin comes into contact with and how much damage is caused. For example, industrial areas pose a higher risk of exposure due to a higher concentration of pollutants. There are many types of pollutants are known to cause an increase in free radicals:
    ●       UVB Rays
    ●       Dust
    ●       Cigarette smoke
    ●       Cleaning products
    ●       Pesticides

Antioxidants bind to these free radicals and balance them out before they have a chance to damage your skin cells.

Which products are best for your skin?

Clinical trials show that it’s best to look out for skincare products that contain an active form of vitamin C such as ‘L-ascorbic acid’. The strength should be 10-20% and the product should have a pH lower than 3.5. This may all sounds a bit technical and the sheer amount of products out there can be a bit overwhelming. But don’t worry: we can help you decide which is right for you.

At Rejuva, we recommend ALL SKIN|MED Light Anti-Ox Vitamin C Moisturising Gel – an ultra light, barely there hydrating gel that contains a cocktail of protective and brightening anti-oxidants plus regenerative growth factors that work at a dermal level to improve your skins structure. We love that this anti-ageing Gel is gentle enough for use on sensitive skin as well as combination and acne prone skin.

Safety first: always do a patch test!

Vitamin C products are generally safe to use but any skincare product can cause a reaction.

We strongly advise you to test out new products on a small area of skin such as your forearm before using it on your face or neck. Wait for 24 hours to see if you have any signs of a rash, redness or other serious irritation.

Get Stabilized!

Vitamin C is an effective, yet temperamental ingredient because it degrades very easily. Which is why you need stabilized vitamin C in your skin care routine.

Standard vitamin C can become unstable when exposed to heat, light and air. If the particle is not stable, it will not be effective.

Stabilized vitamin C also has a longer shelf life and a high concentration of active, however it is important to check the use-by date of products. Vitamin C can oxidise over time, causing it to darken or change colour. The product won’t be unsafe to use – but it certainly won’t benefit your skin in the same way.

How to use:

The beauty of vitamin C is that it’s easy to use as part of your daily skincare routine. For example, simply apply 2-3 pumps to the face and neck after cleansing and before applying moisturiser and sunscreen. It may be two or three months before you see any noticeable improvements, so commitment is key!

Eat well too:

Although skincare products are the best way to get vitamin C directly onto your skin, you should also make sure you’re getting a good supply through a healthy diet which includes:

  • Citrus fruit such as oranges and grapefruit.
  • Kiwi fruit, mango, watermelon, pineapple, strawberries, blackcurrants, raspberries, blueberries and cranberries.
  • Broccoli, brussels sprouts, potatoes, and peppers.

The body doesn’t store vitamin C – so make it a part of your daily diet.
